Porec is situated on the west coast of Istria, the biggest Croatian peninsula. Porec has 37 km of coastline that extends from the valley of river Mirna on the north to the deep Lim Fjord on the south. Clean beaches and bays and numerous islands are a symbol of Porec. The biggest and most beautiful of all Porec islands, Sv. Nikola (Saint Nicholas), encloses the charming port of Porec. The round tower on the island Sv. Nikola, dating from 1402, is one of the oldest lighthouses in Adriatic (not in use anymore). City's population of approximately 12,000 resides mostly on the outskirts, while the Porec region as a whole has a population of approximately 17,000 inhabitants. The city area covers 142 square kilometres, with the 37 km long shoreline.
The climate is extremely mild, free of oppressive summer heat; an average air temperature in August, the warmest month, reaches 24 °C and in January 4.5 °C. The average annual rainfall of 920 mm is equally distributed all over the year, supporting luxuriant vegetation; forests of pines and stone pine reach the sea in places. Chief occupations include farming, viniculture, olive growing, fruit growing, fishing and tourism.
Porec is a tourist centre famous for its beautiful natural landscape, long tradition in tourism and several well-equipped tourist resorts: Plava and Zelena Laguna (Blue and Green Lagoon), Brulo, Pical, Spadici.
History of Porec begins before more than 2000 years when old Romans conquered Histrian aborigines and founded the castrum (military facility) on the 400 m long and 200 m wide peninsula.
Baredine Cave:
This cave is a treasure chest of stalagmites and stalactites, underworld sculptures created through time. In one of the atriums you can see a crater that is 4m wide and 66 m deep which goes down to the underground lakes, and five halls, five galleries of abstract and realistic sculptures, the animals of the underworld, human fish and endemic animals that live only in this environment, miniature see-through crabs and insects.
The whole old city of Porec is monument of culture. Here we will present some of cultural sights.
Euphrasius Basilica:
The most valuable cultural monument in Porec, protected by UNESCO. It was built on the remains of an earlier tri-naval basilica, in the first half of the 6th century, during the period of Bishop Euphrasius.[more]
Round Tower:
Built in the second half of the l5th century. It is well preserved. There is a terrace on the top which can be visited.
House of Two Saints:
Built in the 14/15th century in a Romanesque style. It derived its name from the two stone relief figures of the two saints alongside the window on the last floor. On the ground floor a large stone arch stands out.
Pentagonal Tower:
Located at the beginning of the main street, Decumanus, at the entrance of the old city heart. It was built in the mid l5th century in Gothic style. There is a relief of a Mletke lion on it. Up until the French occupation, parts of the Great City Doors were preserved.
